Please allow us to introduce our Wedding Party — T & M
I met Toby in Grade 1, over 28 years ago and despite not being invited to his birthday party in the 1st grade we've been friends ever since. Growing up Toby's house was the hang out spot; endless summer nights, video games, wall ball, even dodging lightning.
Toby has always been more like a brother than a friend. He committed to being a Godfather to my son Elijah 10 years ago has remained true to his word!
I knew when Toby met Melissa she was the perfect match because she loved video games as much as Toby (maybe even more). I am so happy for Toby and Melis !!!
Hola my name is Karol! I am an urban planner, community animator and aspiring documentary filmmaker.
I met Melis on the Dufferin Bus in Grade 9. When I met Mel, I asked myself "Who is this girl with frizzy hair like mine?" And so the friendship began. Our high school years were spent collaborating on a our zine "KaroMel" where we discussed life, boys and music. Yes, we were ahead of our time. Although I did go away to Waterloo for a couple of years, I did make my way back to the T-Dot where I reunited with Mel and Rachelle (other fabulous bridesmaid). Our twenties were spent partying in my crib, dating B-list guys and trying to graduate university. Good times, good times.
When Mel told me this Blond boy asked her out, I knew he was the one. Taking a page out of the Karol playbook, I knew once you go blond you just can't go back. Now the fact that Toby and I share just about a million similar interests, well then I knew it was a match made in heaven.
Can't wait to share Melissa and Toby's special day! I'll be with the one with my FlipVideo and giving everyone a new nickname. Wowsers!
Hi, my name is Callum. As the second-youngest of five children, my formative years were spent tirelessly attempting to imitate the eldest Sutherland sibling. That this required me to take actions like having my ear pierced in the first grade (crazy, eh?), I could not be deterred.
While I no longer wear an earring or don baggy pants, I consider myself enormously fortunate to have successfully imitated his over-sized heart. That sibling is, of course, Toby, and just as I will never forget the moment I became cognizant of how great my oldest brother is, I will never forget the day I realized the same about Melissa.
Overly-sentimental stuff aside, I will be counting down the days until Melissa (officially) becomes my sister!
I am proud to say I've known Melissa the longest here. We've known each other since I first moved to Toronto at age 10. As kids, we always hung out at each other's homes. I preferred to play at her house because she had the coolest house in all of Parkdale. We both went to the same elementary school, junior school, high school and university. Even though we weren't always in the same classes, it didn't hinder our friendship at all.
We both share the love of the colour purple, Puma bags, movies and smutty vampire novels. I can recall when Melis told me she met a guy at work she really liked.
And when I finally met this guy, Toby, I knew he was a keeper for Melis. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Tobes is a perfect look-alike of Jax Teller from the 'Sons of Anarchy' - bonus! I'm so happy and honoured to be one of Melis' bridesmaids. Can't wait to celebrate on their biggest and happiest day! Love you both. MUAW!
Hey, my name is Sean. I am Toby's oldest, younger Brother. Growing up, I have always had Toby to look up to and I always knew that I could count on him. He got me into baseball, helped me land one of my first jobs and was even the best man at my wedding.
As my big brother, Toby has always gone above and beyond for me and I owe him the world for all of his guidance and support. Like Toby, Melissa has been there for me and my family from the day we met her. I couldn't be happier that Toby has found someone as special as Melissa. Like my big bro, I know I will always be able to count on her.
The two of them, are a perfect match and I can't wait until the wedding day.
Melissa and I first met through our 'zines and correspondence (Yes, this was waaaay before Facebook and even Friendster). We didn't meet in person until a year later when we both attended York University. We suffered through some horrible Natural Science class and the only thing that amused us was bonding over how much our friend Aron looked like the dude from Cypress Hill. When I transferred to Ryerson University, I ended up moving just a few streets away from Melissa's place on Hallam St. We spent our time shopping for Hello Kitty stuff, going to punk shows and clubbing it up downtown.
My earliest memory of meeting Toby was an IKEA shopping trip where he paced the store like a caged rat, looking for the nearest exit to escape from his own shopping hell. There was also the UMBRA wear house sale that he also barely survived. Since then, Melissa and I know better than to involve Toby in any shopping expeditions.
I'm super thrilled to be party of the wedding party and am looking forward to the big day!
My relationship with the bride and groom dates all the way back to a glorious summer in 1989, when I first met a 10 year old Tobias Sutherland; my big bro! Even though we've always been separated by those 10 years, Toby has always managed to be equal parts mentor and friend. And I couldn't be happier knowing that my big bro will soon be tying the knot with the love of his life.
I will never forget my first encounter with Melis, after waking up on a piping hot summer night in 2004 when she came in to introduce herself to me in the living room where I had fallen asleep. I knew from that moment on that she was special because she acted as if she wasn't even weirded out to find me sprawled out on the couch, wearing nothing but my boxers (or were they tighty whities?).
I can't remember a time where it didn't feel like she was a part of our family, so I sure am excited for it to finally be made official this summer!
Hi my name is Elijah, Toby's Godson. I've known him my whole life. I look up to Toby and my Dad, he helps me with video games and computers and he's always there for me. And I've never seen him get mad.
Melissa is awesome and really good at video games she's always been very nice to me and is a great match for Toby.
I'm very honoured to be a part of this wedding and I'm very happy for them.
I came to the neighborhood when I was at the age of 7. I lived at the time a 10min walk from Toby’s home (when you're small everything seems a little bit further away).
Toby was very much into playing box (for all you who don’t know, it is a variation on the game of baseball), and playing outside. The gist of it is we have known each other for a long time – when I didn’t have a home his family provided me with one, when I felt I didn’t have a family he became my brother.
Toby is the kindest, and most giving person I know, and because of that I knew when I met Melis that he had chosen the person that was meant for him.
